In the Spring of 2013, the Boston University Dance Team (BUDT) visited Daytona, Florida to compete in the National Dance Alliance (NDA) competition. The NDA competition is held every year. All colleges and universities that have dance teams come to Daytona to compete for a national title.

In 2012, BUDT placed fifth in Team Dance, the highest award the dance team had ever earned. The following year, the 2013-2014 season, BUDT decided to compete in two categories – Team Dance and Hip Hop.

BUDT had competed in Team Dance for years, but this was the first time the team would compete an all hip-hop routine.

The team trained for an entire season with exhausting practices. When they arrived to Daytona, the girls were ready to compete both their dances.

The team ranked second in nation for Team Dance – trailing right behind Towson (the reigning champs in the Team Dance category). The ultimate shock and celebration came when the host for NDA announced that the Boston University Dance Team had won the national title in the Hip-Hop division. Competing a hip-hop dance for the first time in BUDT history, the team beat the reigning champs, Jack Attack.

As a Boston University Dance Team member, I was not expecting a national title, but that was the moment when I realized all the work was worth it. The practices 5-6 days a week, the cardio practices where we ran dances back-to-back for almost two hours, the late nights – everything made that moment memorable.

We came home with a National Champions trophy and National Championship rings.

We will return to Daytona in a few weeks to compete in the Team Dance division and defend our national title.

Wish us luck!
